About us
The Raleigh/Wake County, NC, branch of the American Association of University Women meets regularly from September through May, usually on the second Tuesday evening of the month. Winter meetings are held on Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoon. The branch is committed to the goals of the AAUW Educational Foundation and the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund, and two or three meetings a year are devoted to fundraising (and FUN raising!).The branch is active in promoting equity in the local schools. It has honored teachers that promote equity in the classroom, and it has encouraged girls’ interest in science, mathematics and technology with
- workshops - partnering with Women and Math Mentoring and Expanding Your Horizons (EYH workshop details), and
- support for the Sally Ride Toy Challenge and Sally Ride Science Festivals
It is also active in public policy with a sustained effort coordinating with the national AAUW Voter Education Campaign, and focusing on how local elections affect the schools in Wake County. For example, see more information on
- 2007 Wake County Board of Education Candidates’ Survey

In February, 2007, we initiated a new program based on the Association’s Transitions Conferences, encouraging women to enter or return to higher education — see www.turntolearn.org. We participated in a second, similar event in May, 2009.
We are working on the sixth edition of our Interpreter’s Directory.

The Raleigh Branch, organized February 12, 1909, is the oldest branch in North Carolina and the third oldest branch in the South Atlantic Region; only Richmond and Atlanta branches are older. These three originated as branches of the Southern Association of College Women and became branches of AAUW when the Association of Collegiate Alumnae (organized in 1881) merged in 1921 with the Southern Association of College Women (organized in 1903) to form the American Association of University Women. The name was changed in 1997-98 to Raleigh/Wake County Branch.
