Wake Literacy Gala with Margaret Maron

The Literacy Council of Wake County is planning its 4th Annual Black, White & Read All Over gala fundraiser to be held at 6:30-9:30 on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary. They are pleased to announce that North Carolina’s very own Margaret Maron will be the Keynote Speaker for this event.

Tickets are $50 and may be purchased online or by calling the Literacy Council office at 787-5559.

Branch delegation to AAUW NC Convention

Branch president Denny McGuire had a family commitment that kept her from registering for convention. AAUW NC Program VP and branch member Etta Alston had an emergency crop up which kept her from attending the convention.

Join/Renew for 2008-2009

AAUW Raleigh/Wake County is now accepting dues payments for the 2008-2009 year. Dues are $76 ($49 for the Association, $11 for AAUW NC, and $16 for the branch).

Aleasia McNair and Brenda Sutton Williamson, graduates of Shaw University, will also share their experiences. Ms. McNair is married and the mother of 3 teenagers. She graduated from Shaw this month, and she already has two associate degrees. She is anticipating enrolling in graduate school. Ms. Williamson is employed with NC State Government.

Action for Children Luncheon

Action for Children is excited to announce a spring luncheon that will provide the most up-to-date, compelling research about brain development—from birth to adolescence—and its implications for public policy. Join Drs. J. Lawrence Aber and Wilkie Wilson, both experts in the fields of young child and adolescent brain development, as they discuss the intersection of developmental science with such policy issues as health, education, poverty and juvenile justice.

April council meeting

The branch council met at Peace College and discussed

  1. Preparation for the AAUW NC convention
  2. The May meeting - which will be the annual meeting for the branch. Members will be contacted about serving on the 08-09 council.
  3. Support for the May 31 “Your Turn to Learn” transitions event at the YWCA. We will apply for an AAUW NC minigrant to cover some of the costs here. We signed up a few volunteers.
  4. We tabled the issue of the Interpreters’ Directory. There will be followup.
  5. We began discussions of the 100th anniversary of the branch -for Februar, 2009.
  6. We agreed to send $100 to LAF from the proceeds of the author’s brunch — to meet the AAUW NC challenge grant.
  7. We discussed briefly the branch website and need for a newsletter.
