Board of Education Election: October 9

Posted in Events at 10:53 am by nes

The filing period for candidates for the October 9 Wake County Board of Education Election has closed. Board members will be elected by the voters in districts 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8.

In three of the districts, candidates are running unopposed. In district 3 there are three candidates, and in district 6 there are four candidates.

AAUW Raleigh/Wake County and the League of Women Voters of Wake County are doing a survey of the candidates and the results will be posted here in mid-September.

Note that unlike in the election for county commissioners, Board of Education members are elected by the voters in their district.

Current members of the board of education

  • The terms of Carol Parker (district 3) and Susan Parry (6) are up in November, and they are not running for reelection. There is a contested race in district 3 and one candidate in district 6.
  • Incumbents Rosa Gill (4), Beverley Clark (5) and Ron Margiotta (8) are running for reelection. Margiotta and Gill are unopposed.
  • Board members Lori Millberg (1), Horace Tart (2), Patti Head (7) and Eleanor Goettee (9) are serving terms that end in November, 2009.

Off topic, but may be of interest

From another AAUW e-mail list, I got a recommendation:

http://www.goodreads.com

Just learned about this new social networking site where you can list books you’ve read
or are reading, rate and review them, and share with friends. Lots of fun.

If Flickr or MySpace or FaceBook isn’t your thing, maybe that site will be of interest.

On the other hand there was an article on LinkedIn.com in this morning’s News and Observer. There’s the beginning of an AAUW presence there. Check it out — and invite me as a connection if you’d like.
