Barbara Ann Hughes honored

Branch member and long-time AAUW NC and AAUW leader, Barbara Ann Hughes, was among those honored on May 16 by the NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund Power of Prevention Awards for their remarkable efforts to make North Carolina healthier.

Barbara Ann was honored in the category “Leadership in Obesity”.

The citation said:

Dr. Barbara Ann Hughes’ diverse professional career includes clinical, community, consulting, educational and management experience in dietetic, nutrition and health services. She is an adjunct assistant professor at the UNC School of Public Health. In 1991, she established B.A. Hughes & Associates, a full-service private practice providing medical nutrition therapy to individuals in Wake and surrounding counties. She is the director of adult nutrition at the Institute of Lifestyle and Weight Management in Raleigh, and holds many honors and accomplishments in dietetics career

Minutes of the May 14 meeting

The American Association of University Women, Raleigh/Wake County Branch met on May 14, 2007 at the Cameron Village Library with eleven members* present.

President Esther Lumsdon called the meeting to order and called attention to the proposed changes to the Branch Bylaws as noticed in the newsletter. Cathy Kuchinski-McCormick moved and Grace Knechtel seconded to accept the recommendations of the Brach Executive Board regarding changes in the Bylaws. The following changes were made and passed by the members present:

New Article XVII. Section 1. For the period July 1, 2007, through June 30, 2009, a Coordinating Council of four to nine members elected by the membership shall lead and administer the Branch. This Council shall assume and be responsible for the duties of the officers and Board of Directors as stated in Article VII. Section2, and Article VIII, Section 1.b, of these bylaws.

Section 2. This article takes precedence in cases of Conflict between this article and all provisions of these Bylaws, dated Auguest, 2006.Change to Article IX. Meetings, paragraph C. Quorum.Ten percent of the members of the branch shall constitute a quorum.

New paragraph D in this section:
d. Attendance. Members who are attending a branch, board, or executive committee meeting shall be countefd as present if they are present or otherwise linked by electronic means(for example, communicating via teleconference.)

The following were elected to the Cordinating Council by a motion made by Cathy Kuchinski-McCormick and seconded by Etta Alston: Nancy Shoemaker, Sheila Bassoppo-Moyo, Cathy Kuchinski-McCormick, Denny McGuire, Etta Alston, Grace Knechtel, Esther Lumsdon, and Beth Norris.

Beth Norris was elected as the Branch delegate to the AAUW convention to be held in Phoenix, AR in June.

Four branch members who went to the State Convention met and brought forward some suggestions for the Branch for the new year, concerning meeting time and space, program, communication and membership. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for May 29 to consider these suggestions and to made assignments to members of the Coordinating Council as well as to begin planning for the 2007-2008 year.

Grace will be sending out a dues notice this month and will include a short survey of prefered times to hold meetings.

Branch Council Gets underway

At the branch annual meeting on May 14, the bylaws changes were approved and a governing council was elected.

The council will be communicating with an e-mail list, conference calls, and face-to-face meetings. The next meeting is Tuesday, May 29 at 6:30 p.m. in room 202 of the Cameron Village Library, 1930 Clark Avenue, Raleigh. All branch members are welcome at the meeting and are also welcome to join the mailing list. To do that send an e-mail to council-subscribe@rwc.aauwnc.org.

The Ivory-billed Woodpecker: Searching for Proof in the Choctawhatchee River Basin

Join us to learn about the natural history and recent detections of the ivory-billed woodpecker. Drs. Lewbart and Deresienski will tell about their recent travels to the Florida Panhandle in search of this elusive bird, hoping to find evidence that it is not extinct. They will tell about the logistics of undertaking searches in a swamp forest and discuss conservation and politics related to this fascinating animal.

Café Speakers
Dr. Gregory Lewbart received his BA in Biology from Gettysburg College in 1981, an MS in biology from Northeastern University in 1985, and his VMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1988. He worked for a large wholesaler of ornamental fishes before joining the faculty at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1993, where he is professor of aquatic animal medicine.

Dr. Diane Deresienski received her BS in Biology from Boston College in 1983 and her VMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1989.  She has practiced veterinary medicine in New Jersey, Florida and North Carolina. She has been an associate at the Bowman Animal Hospital since 1993 and is an adjunct professor at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine.  She is currently the President of the Piedmont Wildlife Center, a non-profit organization which she helped start in 2002.
