Report on the September Meeting

Posted in Branch News at 3:16 pm by nes

Eleven members gathered for dinner at Piccola Italia on Tuesday, September 2 - to reconnect after the summer hiatus and to discuss branch activities for the year.

The following handouts were distributed:

  • The PayCheck Fairness Act Perfect Storm - a report by Lisa Maatz on the effort that went into passing this bill in the US House of Representatives. Public Policy as a thriller!
  • Branch Financial Reports - Draft of FY07 and FY08 reports as well as FY09 to date. Though our annual unrestricted income is generally between $500 and $1000, we are in good shape with about $4000 in assets that we could devote to a project.
  • Registration for the Wake County Women’s Agenda Assembly on September 16. The branch will have a table - come join us. More information at www.wakewaa2008.org.
  • Branch rosters - and a call list for those who need reminders to pay Fy08-09 dues. [Those were distributed in e-mail and can be downloaded from www.aauw.org > Member Center > Member Services Database.]

We also handed out membership forms for

At a quick business meeting, the branch voted to pay for the wine for the dinner - President Denny McGuire had offered to pay, but was overruled by the branch. Volunteers signed up to call those who have not yet paid their dues. Volunteers signed up to help Denny plan the year’s programs.

For more information on getting involved with the branch, please check with Denny or one of the other members of the council who are listed on the contacts page.

Apologies to those members who received a postcard with incorrect RSVP information. And apologies to the person whose phone number we inadvertently listed.

Keeping up with this news

Posted in Branch News at 9:57 am by nes

Members may have noticed that the branch has not been sending out a regular newsletter, but we are trying to post information to this web site on a regular basis. Some of the posts are “branch news”. Others are event announcements that we think will be of interest to AAUW Members in the Triangle.

If you are using RSS to keep up with other ‘net-based news (from the NY Times, www.aauw.org, and thousands of other sites out on the web), you can subscribe to this site’s feeds directly. [See AAUW NC article introducing RSS.]

Otherwise, you can get these articles in e-mail as they are posted. See the AAUW NC subscribe information with information about using the service at RSSFwd to request these posts via e-mail. The addresses you might want to give to RSSFwd:

[Note that branch meetings appear as both “events” and “branch news” so if you’re not interested in the non-AAUW events we discuss here, it is safe to subscribe to just the “branch news”.]

If you’ve got questions, please ask Nancy Shoemaker (see contacts).

Congratulations, Prof. Shapiro

Posted in Branch News at 1:49 pm by nes

From the July 18, 2008, Raleigh News and Observer:

Meredith professor wins Fulbright award

Sherry Shapiro, professor of dance and director of women’s studies at Meredith College, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to do research and lecture at the University of Cape Town in South Africa during the 2009 spring semester. Shapiro will research dance education in the new South African curriculum and examine the implications for dance education in the process of democratic transformation. She will teach choreography to dance education students at the University of Cape Town and give workshops in dance education for teachers. The course and workshops will use a process Shapiro describes as using “dance as a vehicle for increasing both self and social understanding among students.” Recipients are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and leadership potential in their fields.

Prof. Shapiro is the AAUW College/University representative for Meredith College and a member of the Raleigh/Wake County branch.

Mark your calendar for the AAUW NC 2008 Fall meeting - especially since it will be in Chapel Hill. This will be the last state meeting before the convention where the entire state will celebrate our 100th anniversary. Let’s take a large group over to Chapel Hill to help with the planning.

The exact schedule hasn’t been set, but for planning purposes, you can expect:

Friday evening, October 31. [Shall we make a Halloween Party of it?]
Saturday, November 1.

If either Friday or Saturday fits your schedule, please let Denny or someone else on the council know. [branch contacts]
