Notes from the January meeting

Posted in Branch News at 7:11 pm by Nancy

At the branch meeting on Tuesday, January 6, we met upstairs at the Cameron Village Library.

Several AAUW and non-AAUW announcements:

  • Registration is now open for the AAUW convention in St. Louis, June 26-28. See www.aauw.org/convention/conv2009 for more details. [If you snag a good airfare from Raleigh, please let the rest of us know about it.]
  • Details of the AAUW NC 2009 Convention, March 27 at the Blockade Runner in Wrightsville Beach will be announced in the next couple of weeks. The hotel registration deadline is March 12, and the excellent $99 rate is available Thursday through Saturday. See aauwnc.org for details.
  • Lillian’s List will hold a fundraiser Victory Breakfast on Wednesday, January 28 to celebrate their 2008 Featured Candidates. See lillianslist.org for details.
  • Soroptimist International of Raleigh is sponsoring a STOP Human Trafficking community forum at the Wake County Commons Building on Monday, January 12. Registration deadline is January 9. See http://siraleigh.org/show_page.php?page=15 for details.
  • North Carolina NOW’s annual campaign to collect the names of pro-choice supporters for publication in the Independent and distribution to all the state legislators is underway. Deadline is January 12.
    • Download the form
    • Contact branch member Gailya Paliga, <gailya@nc.rr.com>, if you can make a contribution and want to be included, but might not get the form returned by Jan. 12.
  • Treka brought the African Children’s Choir project to the attention of the branch, and it was agreed to have further discussions on whether the branch can be involved as a sponsor in any way. See www.africanchildrenschoir.com, Mirembe House (a home in Durham that’s a basecamp for the touring choir sponsored by King’s Park International Church)
  • Reminder: there is a branch conference call at 4:00 on January 11 to discuss how we’ll celebrate the 100th anniversary of the branch here in Wake County. [The AAUW NC convention will also include a celebration based on our milestone.]

The program was presented by Nancy Shoemaker.

The agenda for the talk was modified slightly: we didn’t talk much about connecting with other members. For that information see the link in the Table of Contents to the paper on Facebook for AAUW (and click the link on the right-hand column of www.aauwnc.org to find the AAUW NC group in Facebook).

We did discuss using RSS in general (see the link in the Table of Contents) and using iGoogle in particular. See also these references:

We then took a quick tour through aauw.org and aauwnc.org. Highlights that generated particular interest included:

  • Directory of Fellowship and Grant recipients
  • The branch roster is available from www.aauw.org > Member Center > Member Services Database
    • Your member id and a password are required to access that. If you missed the meeting and didn’t get one of the wallet cards with spaces to put the key info to access the AAUW and AAUW NC member centers, you can print out a PDF version of the card.
  • You can also use the Member Services Database to make a donation, update your record, or contact state/branch officers.
  • For the directory of all state/branch officers in North Carolina (including college/university representatives and past state presidents, see www.aauwnc.org/Members/. That has a separate user name/password that we all share — contact someone on the list of Contacts to get the current information.

Be sure to take some time to explore www.aauw.org and www.aauwnc.org - there’s a wealth of information that can make your membership much more valuable. Finally, if you have information to share, we demonstrated a quick post to the branch web site. To get an account that will allow you to make such posts, please contact Nancy (see contacts).
