Girls and STEM - Sharon Schulze presentation
Sharon Schulze spoke to the branch on Tuesday, October 30 on the history and strategies of girls in science, technology, engineering and science.
Dr. Schulze served as Associate Director of The Science House from 2003-2007 and is currently serving as Interim Director. She manages the day-to-day operations, works with various grant-funded projects, and actively pursues collaborations and partnerships to improve K-12 STEM education in North Carolina and across the country. Dr. Schulze has high school classroom experience in physics and mathematics and believes that no learning is ever wasted. She loves to answer questions and is always eager to expand her notion of how the universe works, especially if her own learning helps somebody else learn, too. A native Texan and graduate of Texas A&M University and the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Schulze has put down roots in North Carolina and is delighted to be here today.
The Science House, www.science-house.org, is housed at NC State University with a mission to increase student enthusiasm for science by partnering with K-12 teachers to promote hands-on inquiry-based science learning. For several years they have sponsored an Expanding Your Horizons conference in the spring to engage 7th grade girls with working female scientists. Given this history, they were a natural partner to join the National Girls Collaborative Project, whose goal is to increase the sustainability and impact of programs and initiatives to create gender equity in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Dr. Schulze gave background on the question of gender equity, and described the current efforts.
