Celebrating 100 Years of AAUW in North Carolina!
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the AAUW Raleigh/Wake County branch, founded in February of 1909. Advances in equity and education for women and girls have been remarkable, but there is still work to be done.
Join us as we reflect on the past, celebrate the women who have gone before us, and work to improve the lives of the women who will follow us — so that we can ensure a better world for everyone.
We hope this site is useful to AAUW members and those residents of the Triangle who are interested in the mission and goals of the Association. Visitors are welcome at all branch meetings. For more information send mail to info@rwc.aauwnc.org and someone will be in touch with you. To join the branch, see the membership form.
General AAUW Information
Mission Statement
AAUW, founded in 1881, advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. We are a membership organization with a complementary charitable organization, the AAUW Educational Foundation. Those two corporations will become one entity as of July 1, 2009.
- Our advocacy combines a grass roots process for determining priorities with a strong staff at the national level that partners with the members when action is needed on federal issues. At the state level we work through coalitions such as NC Women United to increase our members’ power on NC issues. [more on our history of activism]
- Our roots in education run deep: from fellowships for graduate women, to support for those fighting sex discrimination in the workplace, to years of programs supporting students in K-12 and higher education, we never stray far from our ties to education.
- We support graduate students in their research, and fund our own on issues related to equity and education. We were the ones who changed the conversation about girls in the schools with our 1992 report, “Shortchanging Girls: Shortchanging America” and our research continues with the most recent “Where the Girls Are.” [more on our research]
Diversity Statement
In principle and practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There shall be no barriers to full participation on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or class.
Membership
Membership is open to all graduates who hold an associate or equivalent, baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
